The first of this year’s EU Alumni Association events, the Russian Christmas Dinner and Conference, took place in Brussels, Belgium on January 6 this year. The thoroughly enjoyable event was held at the Cercle Royal du Parc, one of the oldest clubs in the city, which was founded in 1842, shortly after the country gained independence. The building it currently occupies dates back to 1910, is surrounded by a garden and offers a view over the ponds.
Special guests of honor at the event were Jacques van Rijckevorsel, President of the Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce for Russia and Belarus and Member of the Executive Committee of Solvay, and Filip Vandenbroele, Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Republic of Belarus.
Daniel Stevens, Vice-President and General Secretary of the Belgian-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce for Russia and Belarus, gave a presentation at the event, on the topic of: “Mysterious, and little known Russia, yet so near to us: A little know but attractive country, another vision of history, and a surprisingly tied and strong Belgian-Russian relationship”. Stevens is also the founder, former President and Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of Russian heritage in the European Union and a consultant and lecturer for matters concerning Russia and Ukraine. His talk gave an interesting insight and was greatly enjoyed by all those in attendance.
Xavier de Bergeyck, Chapter Leader for Brussels, organized the dinner and conference. He received several messages after the event from attendees who wished to thank him and explain how much they had enjoyed the get-together.
